SWIMMING SKILLS YOU NEED
Swimming is the ability to remain afloat and move through water using your limbs with minimum effort. Swimming is one of the sports that are loved by people of all ages and levels. It gives people a sense of enjoyment and also benefits of exercise.
Swimming as a sport is well developed in countries such as the United States of America,Britain,Canada and Australia and many others.In those countries swimming is taught as a subject and as a spot for international competitions.
In kenya swimming was introduced as a sport in some schools such as Kenya High, Nairobi school and Lena by their colonialists, British. Now it is being taught in primary and secondary schools, colleges and even universities
Beginners in swimming must be introduced to three basic skills. these are the skills
Entry- In a swimming pool we have to major parts,the shallow end and deep end. As you should always use the shallow end to be safe.You should sit on the edge of the pool,hold the side of the rail and twist yourself around into the water. Later you can learn to jump in the water
Exit- As a beginner you should face away from the pool and place hands on the edge,shoulders width.Then push with the palms to raise your body,then turn and place your buttocks on the edge of the pool in the position that you were in before entry,simply means facing the pool
Submerging- A swimming beginner should move away from the rail and do simple exercises .This simple exercises include standing, walking putting the head under the water,dancing a little bit and sitting in water.You can also submerge the whole body while controlling your breathing.The best way of controlling your breathe is by taking a deep breath and holding it to submerge.Note better that you should breath out while under or out of the water.
Another important thing for swimming
beginner is having water confidence skills.I am going to give you five activities that you can exercise to gain or increase your confiy in water;
Touching toes under water
Standing in the water and practice blowing bubbles
Collecting objects on the floor of the pool
In pairs,passing between partners feet
Take a breath and then crouch down, putting your face under the surface
Blow out explosives into the water through your mouth and nose.Then spring up to break the surface and take in another breath through the mouth
To avoid drinking water in the pool you should control your breathing by exercising the following
-Do not force the air out foo faster, remember we said that you should breath out under the water through the nose and mouth and breathing in above the water through the mouth
- Inhale only when air is needed
- Keep forcing air out until the mouth is in a position to inhale
- Do not attempt to inhale until the mouth is above the water
- Open eyes for relaxation
- keep the body underwater while performing the breathing drill
